Access to GP surgeries over Easter bank holiday
Thursday 09 April 2020
NHS Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is working closely with GP practices in Northumberland to ensure that people have access to health care if they need it over the Easter bank holiday weekend.
GP practices are staying open on Good Friday and Easter Monday to cope with the extra demand.
People are reminded, however, that they may see some changes in how they access a GP, but should continue to contact their usual practice in the normal way via telephone or online services.
Dr Graham Syers, Clinical Chair at the CCG said: “We are taking all the necessary steps to protect our population against Coronavirus as much as we possibly can. Whilst we understand this is a very difficult time we want to stress that there will be GP services available for people who need urgent medical care.”
Where possible, patient contact with a GP will be via telephone or an online consultation.
If a face-to-face appointment is necessary, patients may be asked to attend a different surgery, to their usual practice, or to see a different healthcare professional. This is to allow for potential COVID-19 patients to be seen by the most appropriate professional, in the right place and to be separated from those patients who don’t have COVID-19 related symptoms.
Dr Syers continued: “We want to make sure we minimise the risk of this virus spreading as much as possible. I know that we are all making many sacrifices at the moment, and it’s really tough having to stay in over the Easter bank holiday, especially when the weather is starting to improve. But it is vitally important we follow the government guidance and stay at home.
“On behalf of all GPs and their teams in Northumberland I want to say a huge thank you to the public for working together with us by following the advice and helping us to save lives.”
Patients are being reminded to use NHS 111 online for urgent medical advice which is not life threatening and only call NHS 111 if they are unable to use online services.
Some pharmacies across Northumberland will also be open if patients need medication or advice.
